    Heavy ion beam lifetimes at relativistic and ultrarelativistic colliders

    The effects of higher order corrections in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions are considered. It is found that higher order contributions are small at low energy, large at intermediate energy and small again at very high energy. An explanation for this effect is given. This means that the Weizsacker-Williams formula is a good approximation to use in calculating cross sections and beam lifetimes at energies relevant to RHIC and LHC.Comment: 10 pages, 2 tables, 4 figure

    Process-dependence of biogenic feedback effects in models of plankton dynamics.

    The prospect of human-induced climate change has stimulated research into several biological processes that might affect climate. One such process that has attracted a substantial research effort is the so-called CLAW hypothesis (Charlson et al. 1987). This hypothesis suggests that marine plankton ecosystems may effectively regulate climate by a feedback associated with the production of dimethylsulphide (DMS). Charlson et al. (1987) observed that some of the DMS produced by marine ecosystems is transferred from the ocean to the atmosphere where it is the major source of cloud condensing nuclei (CCN) over the remote oceans. The aerosols resulting from biogenic DMS emissions can have a direct effect on the solar radiative forcing experienced by the Earth through scattering, absorption and reflection and can also lead to increased cloud formation; the CLAW hypothesis proposes that these mechanisms could regulate climate. Charlson et al (1987) argued that an increase in global temperature would lead to increased biogenic DMS emissions from the ocean and result in an increase in scattering, cloud cover and cloud albedo that would increase the proportion of the incoming solar radiation reflected back into space (thus changing the global albedo), and thereby cooling the planet. The objective of this paper is to examine the implications of the climate regulation process proposed by Charlson et al. (1987) for the dynamics of the ecosystems that produce it. Cropp et al. (2007) developed a simple plankton model that incorporated the DMS feedback mechanism and compared its dynamics to the same ecosystem model without the feedback. These simulations revealed that the presence of the feedback generally enhanced the stability of the ecosystem by making it more resilient to perturbation. In this research, we compare the effect of the feedbacks on a similar NPZ ecosystem model that has a greater range of dynamical behaviour than the model used by Cropp et al. (2007). The results of simulations with the new feedback model are compared to the results of Cropp et al. (2007) to elucidate the influence of the model formulation on the effects of the feedback

    Future mobile satellite communication concepts at 20/30 GHz

    The outline of a design of a system using ultra small earth stations (picoterminals) for data traffic at 20/30 GHz is discussed. The picoterminals would be battery powered, have an RF transmitter power of 0.5 W, use a 10 cm square patch antenna, and have a receiver G/T of about -8 dB/K. Spread spectrum modulation would be required (due to interference consideration) to allow a telex type data link (less than 200 bit/s data rate) from the picoterminal to the hub station of the network and about 40 kbit/s on the outbound patch. An Olympus type transponder at 20/30 GHz could maintain several thousand simultaneous picoterminal circuits. The possibility of demonstrating a picoterminal network with voice traffic using Olympus is discussed together with fully mobile systems based on this concept

    Modelling dimethylsulphide production at the Bermuda Atlantic time series (BATS)

    Dimethylsulphide (DMS) is produced by upper ocean ecosystems and emitted to the atmosphere where it may have an important role in climate regulation. Several attempts to quantify the role of DMS in climate change have been undertaken in modeling studies. We examine a model of biogenic DMS production and describe its endogenous dynamics and sensitivities. We extend the model to develop a one-dimensional version that more accurately resolves the important processes of the mixed layer in determining the ecosystem dynamics. Comparisons of the results of the one-dimensional model with vertical profiles of DMS in the upper ocean measured at the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series suggest that the model represents the interaction between the biological and physical processes well. Our analysis of the model confirms its veracity and provides insights into the important processes determining DMS concentration in the oceans

    Immunity to Murine Sarcoma Virus Induced Tumors. III. Analysis of the Cell Populations Involved in Protection from Lethal Tumour Progression of Sublethally Irradiated, MSV Inoculated, Mice

    A comparison was made between the cells responsible for demonstrable activity against MSV antigens, using both in vivo and in vitro assays. Similar cells (in terms of size and sensitivity to anti-theta serum) were detected in both assays. However, while lymphoid cells from animals at all stages post-MSV infection were active in protecting irradiated mice from the lethal effect of induction of MSV sarcomata, cells from animals at early stages post-MSV infection (when the tumour was in a progressive phase of growth) were not active in the in vitro assay. By manipulation of the in vivo assay conditions a situation was observed in which cells from ā€œprogressor animalsā€ were able to suppress both the in vitro and in vivo activity of regressor lymphoid cells.     Evaluation of an interview skills training package for adolescents with speech, language and communication needs

    BACKGROUND & AIMS: We evaluated a structured intervention programme aimed at preparing adolescents with developmental language disorders for job interviews. Our primary outcome measures included change in ratings of verbal and nonā€verbal social communication behaviours evident during mock interviews. METHODS & PROCEDURES: In study 1, 12 participants, aged 17ā€“19 years, from a specialist sixthā€form college completed the intervention and two mock interviews, one preā€ and one postā€intervention. In study 2, 34 participants, aged 17ā€“19 years, completed a modified intervention programme and three mock interviews, one at baseline (included to control for possible practise effects), one preā€ and one postā€intervention. In both studies, interviews were video recorded and social communication behaviours were coded by independent assessors blind to interview time, participant diagnosis and therapy content. A repeatedā€measures design was employed to measure change in communication behaviours. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: In study 1, a significant increase in the number of ā€˜positiveā€™ verbal and nonā€verbal social communication behaviours was observed from preā€ to postā€intervention. However, there was no significant change in the number of ā€˜negativeā€™ behaviours (i.e., fidgeting, irrelevant remarks). In study 2, there were no significant changes in verbal behaviours, but significant group differences (though wide individual variation) in both positive and negative nonā€verbal social communication behaviours. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Our findings suggest that training specific social communication skills that are important for interview success, and consistently reinforcing those behaviours during therapy practice, can increase the use of those skills in an interview setting, though in this heterogeneous population there was considerable variation in therapy outcome. The skills of the interviewer were identified as a potential source of variation in outcome, and a target for future research and practice

    Limit cycles in the presence of convection, a travelling wave analysis

    We consider a diffusion model with limit cycle reaction functions, in the presence of convection. We select a set of functions derived from a realistic reaction model: the Schnakenberg equations. This resultant form is unsymmetrical. We find a transformation which maps the irregular equations into model form. Next we transform the dependent variables into polar form. From here, a travelling wave analysis is performed on the radial variable. Results are complex, but we make some simple estimates. We carry out numerical experiments to test our analysis. An initial `knock' starts the propagation of pattern. The speed of the travelling wave is not quite as expected. We investigate further. The system demonstrates distinctly different behaviour to the left and the right. We explain how this phenomenon occurs by examining the underlying behaviour.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

    Pion and Kaon Lab Frame Differential Cross Sections for Intermediate Energy Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

    Space radiation transport codes require accurate models for hadron production in intermediate energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. Codes require cross sections to be written in terms of lab frame variables and it is important to be able to verify models against experimental data in the lab frame. Several models are compared to lab frame data. It is found that models based on algebraic parameterizations are unable to describe intermediate energy differential cross section data. However, simple thermal model parameterizations, when appropriately transformed from the center of momentum to the lab frame, are able to account for the data
